5.07.21 - Creative Action Chef's Dinner - Austin, TX

It was certainly nice to be at a dinner party again.  This was a great occasion to raise money for Creative Action.  Foster ATX did a tremendous job putting it together.  The team of chefs was headed by Gabe Erales and Byron Gomez – both appear on this season of Top Chef.  Jitters TX provided the great cocktails with Lalo tequilla.  Overall it was a fun and celebratory evening in the penthouse at The Proper in downtown Austin, TX.  Early on guests were treated to music by Angelica Rahe.  Photographically what I loved about this was the late afternoon sun coming through the venue – it really gave me an opportunity to play with light and shadow.  After sunset there was enough ambient light for me to photograph without a flash – I really dislike on camera flash at events; especially intimate events as it is distracting and I feel it takes away from the guest experience.

4.23.21 - Plank Seafood - Austin, TX

Plank Seafood recently opened a location at the Domain in Austin.  I love being involved in openings – the newness of a beginning, the hustle and bustle, the excitement – it feels like the first day of a new semester in college. The interior is beautiful and the food is as well as you can se below.  I even got invited to the soft opening so I got to taste the food.  It was great and I am still thinking about the Pickled Shrimp and Crackers.

3.31.21 - Barley Swine Tasting Menu - Austin, TX

Barley Swine – one of the best restaurants in Austin – especially the tasting menu.  Some of the food looks delicate – the tastes and textures are intricate – which is one of the reasons I love to photograph here.  The food is art – the sourcing, the appearance, and the taste.  And while some of the earlier dishes in the coursing look small and delicate at times – I am always surprised by the detail of the flavors and textures.  Quite a treat indeed.  Bryce, Stefan, Kevin, Augustus, and the crew continually knock it out of the park with the food and drink pairings.

3.9.21 - Aviary & Sour Duck Burger Pop Up - Austin, TX

The late winter snow storm caught us all off guard. Our local farmers had little protection for their crops, which resulted in some pretty significant losses. Chef Andre Molina from Aviary and Chef Zechariah Perez of Sour Duck Market decided to have a burger pop-up to benefit two local farms – Vrndt and Hat & Heart Farm.  The burgers were amazing and we got to see a lot of friendly faces – I know the chefs from our days at Odd Duck and it was great to see a lot of current and former Odd Duck friends stop by.  In total they raised over $2,000 for the farms.  Below are some photos of the event at Aviary.

1.21.21 - Milonga Room - Austin, TX

Located in the basement of  Buenos Aires Cafe in East Austin the Milonga Room is a dark, cozy place to enjoy a cocktail.  Head bartender Kyle makes unique cocktails and serves them with such professionalism.  They sometimes have live music and it is rumored to be haunted – there is even a shrine to their spirit.  These photos are from October 2020.  As we are in the midst of the COVID-19 days bars and restaurants are trying their best to survive.  It is my hope that we do not lose any of these gems as food and cocktails are integral to local culture and community.  I know that I have missed visiting my favorite places – I miss the social interaction, I miss eating a variety of foods, I miss the atmosphere of a crowded room, I miss meeting new people and sharing life experiences.
